Last Tours of Abney Chapel: It's Makers and History

  • Abney Park Trust Stoke Newington High Street London, England, N16 0LH United Kingdom (map)

Location: Abney Park
Date: Multiple dates and times available between 9 and 11 June

In preparation for the restoration works inside Abney Park Chapel, Abney Park Trust will be hosting guided tours of the park with a focus on the history of the Chapel.

After 14 June 2021 Abney Park Chapel will be out of bounds for events until it is fully restored. This is a landmark moment in history as the chapel has been in its current state for many years. We at Abney Park Trust therefore want to offer this once in a lifetime opportunity to step inside the chapel before it changes forever.

Abney Chapel's Makers and History

This tour will be hosted by Abney Park Trust's Coordinator, Zachariah Young. It will look into the people who contributed to the Chapel's formation, including its Architect, William Hosking and its stone mason, John Jay. Certain details of Abney Chapel will be brought up to examination in order to see what makes it distinct within its Victorian Gothic context.

Like all things in Abney Park Cemetery, the Chapel is very different to conventional norms. It was built in the Dissenting Gothic style to represent the non-conformist nature of the cemetery.

As well as looking at the building itself, this tour will detail some of the esteemed guests who have visited the chapel, ranging from Charles Dickens to Amy Winehouse.

Please meet at the South Lodge by the Stoke Newington High Street gates 5 minutes before your allotted time.
