Join Abney Unearthed for this brand new tour based on research into the 200,000+ people buried in the cemetery. Hear the stories of those who lost their lives at sea who are either buried at Abney Park, or commemorated on a family grave. The subjects of this tour include seafarers lost on various oceans, families lost in shipping and ferry disasters, ship’s surgeons and a naval captain posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross.

When she and a journalist showed it was possible to purchase a 13 year old girl, the Government's response was to imprison those who exposed this. Abney holds people who planned and were sentenced for their part in this scandal of the 1880s. Adult themes will be discussed.

From 18th to 20th December 1817, a mild mannered bookseller faced a three day show trial in the City of London's Guildhall before the Lord Chief Justice. William Hone was an early satirist and investigative journalist who had repeatedly irritated the Government. Hone's trial is an important milestone in Press freedom and the liberty of the jury system. Hone and George Cruikshank's (his and Dickens' illustrator) satire is still sharp and relevant and the tour will discuss this and the issues it raises.
