Carved above the entrance to Abney Park, in Egyptian hieroglyphs, is an inscription that reads: the gates of the abode of the mortal part of man.

This Halloween, the gates will open.

Gates of the Abode is Abney Park’s five-week seasonal programme of talks, workshops and encounters exploring death, departure and the unseen.

Taking place across October and into early November, the programme moves between social history and material culture, folklore and Spiritualism, dreams, intuition and creative practice - all through the lens of Abney Park’s rich heritage. It traces the ways people have sought to understand absence, commemorate the dead and make contact with what lies beyond the visible world.
