Stoke Newington and WW1 : Zeppelins over Abney Park
Abney Park Cemetery has many memorials and momentos of World War One. The tour will talk about the forgotten air raids , the story of the Old Contemptibles and the Angel of Mons, rediscovered graves and other tales of 1914 -18. This compelling tour is led by historian Alan Gartrell.

Women of Abney Park Cemetery: International Women's Day Walking Tour
For International Women’s Day, the Doyennes of Death pay homage to the cemetery’s fierce female mould breakers, risk takers and pioneers whose stories are both awe inspiring and poignant. Context is everything (especially with history) and this tour will examine the often adverse social, political and economic circumstances faced by the Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian Women of Abney Park. Celebrate and commemorate these wonderful women in the contemplative setting of Abney Park Cemetery, one of London’s most unique and hidden gems. This inspiring and informative guided tour is delivered by historian Sam Perrin.

The Tottenham Outrage
110 years ago in January 1909 a payroll robbery in Tottenham led to a frantic pursuit of Latvian anarchists over the Lea River marshes. Four people died including PC. William Tyler, who lies buried in Abney Park under one of it’s finest monuments. Led by Alan Gartrell, this tour will tell the story of the 'Tottenham Outrage', also that of P.C Alfred Smith and others killed in the line of duty.

The Three Trials of William Hone
On 18,19th & 20th of December 1817 William Hone, antiquarian, bookseller and journalist was tried for Blasphemous Libel at the London Guildhall. This had been the site for famous treason trials and the charges were a cloak for political repression and an attack on the freedom of the Press. Defying the instructions of the Lord Chief Justice, the Juries acquitted Hone each day. Come to his grave side (Charles Dickens attended the funeral) and hear this amazing story which has caught the attention of Ian Hislop and campaigners over the last 200 years. This tour is led by Alan Gartrell.

Military Abney: The War Graves
There are almost 400 Commonwealth War Graves at Abney Park commemorating the dead of World Wars I & II. This tour will address the history of war burials and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, stories of the graves and individuals together with some of the unusual memorials of other conflicts, including the Indian Rebellion of 1857 and the American Civil War. This informative tour is led by Alan Gartrell.

Twilight All Hallows Eve Tour

Heritage Walk led by Arthur Torrington
As a part of Black History Month, everyone is invited to a heritage walk to the resting place of Joanna Vassa, wife of Henry Bromley, and daughter of Olaudah Equiano, or Gustavus Vassa, The African, best-selling author and abolitionist. The event also celebrates the 230th anniversary of his book, The Interesting Narrative, which was published in 1789, and which is included in the top 100 non-fiction books of all times (The Guardian Newspaper, 31st December 2017). Arthur Torrington is Director of The Equiano Society.

Abney and the Abolition of Slavery
1840, the year that Abney Park Cemetery opened was also the year of the great World Anti-slavery Convention which several Stoke Newington residents attended. Join Alan Gartrell to find out about them and other politicians, missionaries and campaigners who fought against slavery.

Ecology of the Stoke Newington Forest
A guided walk through Abney Park Nature Reserve with local ecologist and tree expert Russell Miller.
On this evening walk Russell will discuss how Abney's current woodland relates to earlier landscapes and why it is now a nature reserve of national importance for decaying wood habitat.

The Little Bee Hunt
A guided walk looking for some of Abney's 40 species of native bee.
Local ecologist Russell Miller will be explaining how to identify common bee species and inviting people to join in the hunt for Abney's rarest bee, the Red-Girdled Mining Bee.
