James Braidwood, The Father of the Modern Fire Service

  • Abney Park Trust Stoke Newington High Street London, England, N16 0LH United Kingdom (map)

The world’s first municipal fire service was founded in Edinburgh on 23rd October 1824 and it was lead by James Braidwood.

Braidwood is buried in Abney Park Cemetery and this year marks the 225th anniversary of his birth.  Who was this relatively unknown Scot who recruited and trained a team of fire fighters, and from a blank canvas, created a science in fire-fighting methods.

Why has he been forgotten?  We invite you to come to Diana Hamilton-Jones’s talk to learn about him and why he should be remembered and honoured.
