Welcome to VANITY FAIR – a giddy carousel of social climbers, buffoons and preening dandies. In a world of gossip and speculation, where scandal and celebrity can turn on a sixpence, we follow the twisting fortunes of Becky Sharp and Amelia Sedley.
All is to play for and the stakes are perilously high - for romantic Amelia, consumed with her obsessive love and Becky, an irrepressible schemer who will stop at nothing to get what she wants.
Following the success of last year’s production of Much Ado About Nothing, we are delighted to welcome back Moving Parts Theatre Company to Abney Park, with their fresh and inventive approach to the classics. This brand new adaptation of Thackeray’s rarely performed tale of greed, ambition, love and betrayal will transport audiences from Regency salons and ballrooms to the battlefield of Waterloo!
With a dazzling score of original music by composer Tamara Douglas-Morris and bold, inventive movement devised by Offie-nominated Nevana Stojkov, don’t miss this exciting new adaptation created by the company’s trio, Joanna Nevin, Martin South and Simona Hughes.
FAQs
What time can we arrive?
You can arrive at the performance space from 18.45 pm to take your seats and purchase refreshments from the cafe. You are welcome to arrive earlier to enjoy our magnificent nature reserve. Come and picnic before the show (on the grass alongside the path leading from the High Street entrance is the closest). There is not enough space to accommodate picnics in the performance area itself.
Please arrive at the Stoke Newington High Street entrance to Abney Park (level access) and follow the path directly ahead, the performance area will be signposted to your right.
Should I bring a seat?
No need! We'll provide a mixture of chairs, rugs and cushions for audience members to use. (The advantage of the rugs and cushions is that you're more likely to get a space at the front!). Feel free to bring your own cushion for the folding chairs we are providing. There will be spaces on our patio area reserved for wheelchair access/those with limited mobility and some wider chairs with armrests available if needed. Please email us at info@abneypark.org to let us know your access needs in advance and we will ensure we do our best to accommodate them.
Will there be food and drink?
You can buy food and drink before the show and in the interval at the newly-opened cafe, right next to the performance area. The cafe toilets will be available before the show and during the interval, including accessible facilities.
Can I bring my dog?
Guide/assistance dogs are welcome.
What happens if it rains?
Rain doesn’t stop us - come prepared by packing a waterproof (no umbrellas during performances please as they obstruct views). We’ll ONLY cancel performances if the weather becomes dangerous. Prepare for a hot day by bringing sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses. Bring a coat too in case it gets chilly when the sun sets.
