One Jazz Presents Afternoon Jazz At The Chapel : Coltrane at 100.
A Centenary Celebration - Denys Baptiste and Gary Crosby play the spiritual music of John Coltrane.

Two of the UK’s most acclaimed musicians celebrate saxophonist John Coltrane's centenary year by playing a selection of classics from his spiritual jazz canon. This is the latest in a series of sold-out One Jazz shows in the beautiful and intimate surrounds of the restored Chapel of North London's Abney Park Cemetery.

Gary Crosby is one of the most important figures of all time in UK jazz. A revered bass player he’s also the founder of Tomorrow’s Warriors; he is the only jazz musician to be awarded the Queen’s Medal for Music. Denys Baptiste, a Tomorrow’s Warrior himself, is widely regarded to be one of the greatest players of our age. They are both devotees and students of the music of John Coltrane and in this special concert they will celebrate Coltrane’s legacy in his centenary year.

John Coltrane was born in September 1926 and died at just 40 years old in 1967. In a career that lasted just 20 years he had an impact on jazz and beyond that is matched only by the likes of Miles Davis and Duke Ellington. 

Through the brilliance and majesty of his saxophone playing, the ever-evolving nature of his composition and the pursuit of his spiritual vision, he created a body of work that has echoed down the decades. His seminal recording A Love Supreme remains one of the greatest musical works of all time, in any genre. The term “Spiritual Jazz” is overused, but in the case of Coltrane, it is entirely apt; his music speaks to the spirit, the soul, the mind and the body.

This will be a special event hosted by two living UK jazz giants paying respect to their musical hero.
