Abney Unearthed - Remapped, Researched, Rediscovered
Opened in 1840, Abney Park is one of London’s ‘Magnificent Seven’ Victorian cemeteries, located in Stoke Newington. The 32 acre site is the resting place of over 200,000 people. Designated a local nature reserve in 1993, it is also home to a wide variety of flora and fauna including veteran trees, rare fungi and invertebrates.
Funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Hackney Council, Abney Unearthed is an exciting project to remap the cemetery and discover more about the people buried there. A team of dedicated volunteers are adding missing information to the burial records and researching the people, bringing their diverse stories to life.
Abney Unearthed is hosting an exhibition in the Harriet Deplh room, with displays including a project overview, a brief history of Abney Park, plot maps and stories of just some of the fascinating figures who lived and worked in Hackney, helping shape the place we know now.
Every headstone has a story - visit the exhibition to discover some of them.
This well-received exhibition was a part Hackney History month 2025 and was previously displayed in the Hackney Archives.
Drop in to the Harriet Delph room, in the cafe building at Abney Park.
A talk will be given at 1:00pm - please register if you wish to attend this.
