Imbolc or Candlemas 'Wheel of the Year' Walk and Craft

  • Abney Park Trust Stoke Newington High Street London, England, N16 0LH United Kingdom (map)

Join Nina Lovelace from Hackney Outdoors CIC to identify and learn folk stories and histories associated with trees and plants around Imbolc (or Candlemas) - which is when many cultures celebrate the first signs of Spring, and 'let go' of the past to open up new routes for inspiration. This traditionally happens between the winter solstice and spring equinox, in the first days of February.

You’ll hear about Snowdrops, Daffodils and Hazel, as well as shy Mosses and more - and then learn how to create a traditional Imbolc Brigid's cross or dolly from reeds. We’ll also serve herbal tea to keep everyone warm. This seasonal walk is for adults. Every walk you attend helps Hackney Outdoors to fund its work with local schools.

Highlights:

  • Which early Spring flower was apparently shaped by angels from snowflakes, to give hope to Adam and Eve?

  • Which January flowering tree provides twigs which can be used for dowsing, to find water or mineral veins beneath the soil?

  • Why is the narcissus flower considered sacred in Chinese culture in February?

  • Which slow growing plants can help you navigate - and bind - your wounds?

This is part of our seasonal cycle ‘wheel of the year’ nature walks in which we invite walkers to explore how nature changes at eight points throughout the year and the stories and folklore associated with the changes. The next walk will be at the Spring Equinox in late March.

This seasonal walk is for adults.

Please enter at the High Street entrance and follow the cobblestones to where the paths divide. This will be our meeting point.

Please note:
We may need to cancel at short notice if the weather is inclement - please check your emails on the morning of the walk that you have booked.
