The Origins of Abney Park

  • Abney Park Trust Stoke Newington High Street London, England, N16 0LH United Kingdom (map)

Join us at our community open day for a walking tour to hear about the Origins of Abney Park, with Alan Gartrell.

This talk focuses on the appalling condition of Victorian churchyards (as mentioned in Dickens' Bleak House), The Magnificent Seven, non-conformists, the unique position of Abney Park and its opening ceremony, the avoidance of burial fees, as well as the contributions of George Collison.

This tour is free - donations are welcome. Register below, or join us on the day. We’ll also be holding our community open day that day - so, afterwards, stop by for a chat and pick up a cake, leaflet or some Abney merchandise.

Please meet near the Abney park community stall.
From the Stoke Newington High Street entrance, please meet at the far end of the pedestrian walkway - where the path splits into three.

Speaker Bio:
Alan Gartrell has given tours of Abney Park for many years now. His topics spread a huge range from the history of Hackney's MPs to Abney Park's missionary links. He very modestly says he is not a historian, just a few clicks ahead of everyone else on Wikipedia.

The tour will last around 60 mins.
Please arrive 5 minutes early for the 2pm start.
Please wear suitably sturdy footwear.
There are no toilet facilities available.
