Bird Sightings

Abney Park is a rich habitat for birdlife. The park is a designated Local Nature Reserve, one of 144 in Greater London.

We think it is so important to open up and share our appreciation of the nature on our doorsteps in this magical urban woodland.

We want to build up our understanding of the birds that visitors can see and hear in Abney. Woodland and garden favourites are easy to see in most days. Rarer sightings such as sparrowhawks, redwings and firecrests can also be seen if you are lucky.

Birds are easier to see in the winter when the trees are bare – so this is a great time to get out and see what you can spot, especially on clear early mornings when the birdsong is so loud. See how many from the list below you can tick off. And if you spot birds not on our list, please let us know on info@abneypark.org.

In January we try to run events to coincide with the RSPB’s Great Garden Bird Watch; and in May, when the Dawn Chorus is at its most spectacular, we arrange with London Borough of Hackney for small escorted groups to have access to the site as dawn is breaking (between 5 am and 6am). Watch out for details on our Events Page

So whether you’re an expert or a beginner birder, please enjoy this space as a place to watch birds. And if you have time share sightings with us via info@abneypark.org.

Listen to our birdsong recordings

We have some recordings from April and May 2020 and also teamed up with local podcasters, Radio Lento, to create a unique festive soundscape of birdsong on Christmas morning 2020.
