In celebration of Moth Night 2021, Abney Park Trust has teamed up with Stoke Newington Naturalists to give an exclusive after dark visit to our 32-acre woodland in search of its night-flying moths.
The night will start with a brief talk detailing what moths we might be lucky enough to see, followed by a walk into the heart of Abney Park in the dark to survey moths, and also learn more about any other wildlife we can spot.
Rather than being led by an 'expert', this event is a Citizen Science self-guided learning project. We will provide materials to help you try and identify the moths we see, and help you submit your sightings to the Moth Night website. You will need to bring a torch, and a pen and paper (or smartphone) to make notes on what you spot. A camera or smartphone to take pictures is also useful.
As we're dealing with wildlife, there's no guarantee what we will see. But this should still be a wonderful visit to this special place, to experience its atmosphere after dark and learn more about its non-human residents.
Your participation will help moth conservation in the UK as well as supporting the wildlife in Stoke Newington's most important nature reserve, home to some beautiful and rare moths.
Organised by Atropos, Butterfly Conservation and the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology, Moth Night is the annual celebration of moth recording throughout Britain and Ireland.
Meet at the main gates, Stoke Newington High Street. Please wear sturdy footwear.
End time for event is approximate.
