Back by popular demand, Alan Gartrell brings us a new Dickens themed after dark walking tour after his Literary Haunts sell outs last year.
Charles Dickens was obsessed by the supernatural, from the grisly tales told to him by his infant nursemaid to his late investigations into Spiritualists. His first novel, The Pickwick Papers includes five ghost stories and his last, Edwin Drood, is driven by opium fuelled fantasies. Inbetween he wrote the iconic British tale of uneasy visitation, A Christmas Carol, and created the tradition of the Christmas ghost story with his annual publications. In his real life as a writer and editor an accusation of plagiarism turns into something more uncanny. Come and hear more about Charles Dickens’ phantasmal life. In the Cemetery. At night.
Alan Gartrell has had a long interest in the history and monuments of cemeteries. Abney Park is of particular interest as Alan is a Stoke Newington resident and has family graves in the cemetery. He has given talks on the interweaving of politics, religion and society in that context for some eight years and is interested in the operation of chance and coincidence in developing narratives.
Please use the Church Street entrance (not the High St). Stewards will guide you to the meeting point at the William Booth Memorial, opposite the entry path.
