Join Nina Lovelace from Hackney Outdoors CIC to identify and learn folk stories and histories associated with trees and plants around Beltane or May Day - which is when many cultures celebrate fertility, marriages, birth, and flowers.
You’ll hear stories about the flowers and trees associated with the start of May, such as Hawthorn, Oak, Elderflower, and Rose - and then make your own floral Beltane herbal tea blend or skin oil. We’ll also serve herbal drinks so you can ‘taste’ the plants you’ve met! This seasonal walk is for adults. Every walk you attend helps Hackney Outdoors to fund its renaturing work in London schools.
Join us to find out:
Which European sun-god inspired the festival of Beltane
Which trees are usually associated with the Maypole, and why?
Who is the Oak King and what does he symbolise at this time of year?
What did the Romans get up to at the Springtime Feast of Flowers?
Which trees attract the Faery King and Queen around May Day?
This is part of our seasonal cycle ‘wheel of the year’ nature walks in which we invite walkers to explore how nature changes at eight points throughout the year and the stories and folklore associated with the changes.
Please enter at the High Street entrance and follow the cobblestones to where the paths divide. This will be our meeting point
Please note:
