All Hallows Eve Tour with Sam Perrin:
This All Hallows Eve, Sam Perrin will whirl you around the diverse spiritual practices represented in Abney Park Cemetery.
This tour is not about ghouls, ghosts and what lies beyond. Instead, it explores the Victorian and Edwardian conflict between established religions and alternative spiritual beliefs. These differences in spirituality will be placed in the context of developing science, particularly after the publication of Darwin's On the Origin of Species – which caused a 'crisis of faith'.
Abney is home to a variety of different lifestyles, beliefs and practices. Its core principles of dissent and nonconformity result in residents ranging from pious polemicists to outlandish oddballs. Walking from grave to grave, Sam will illustrate just how diverse and disparate the types of spirituality were in the Victorian and Edwardian eras.
Please meet at the Stoke Newington High Street gates five minutes before the event is due to start.
