Chair's update: July

Hello everyone,

There are two really important things this month that I am focused on personally this month in my role as Chair: completing our fundraising for the Mrs Graham memorial, and recruiting a new Treasurer.

First, we are closing in on our target to raise funds to mark a permanent memorial to Margaret Graham, the pioneering aeronaut. Thanks to some generous pledges, including some from organisations, we are now just over £500 away from our target of £5,000. We have some great plans for unveiling, and local stonemason Charlotte Ruse is ready to begin work.

One of the amazing things about Abney is the hidden history and we are proud to work to tell the stories.  I hope by next month we will have hit our target and be ready to confirm the launch arrangements. And we are always up for ideas and collaborations for future projects.

And secondly, my other top priority is recruiting a new Treasurer. Our current Treasurer, Alison, is standing down after four years in the role. She has helped transform our financial management and see us through COVID while remaining financially strong. This is a really important volunteer role for someone who loves Abney Park and is happy to muck in and help us manage our finances and budgets. We have published a background pack and a role description. You don't need a financial qualification. Get in touch if you would like to discuss, or spread the word.

There is always lots going on in the park and at this time of year it is a wonderful refuge from the heat. Keep an eye on events as we are building up the programme. This month are going to hold another community open day on Sunday 17th July: we will have cakes, Abney merch, lots of information and dog biscuits. What's not to like?

Come and see us, and don't let the closure of the Church Street gates put you off. Your support really matters.
