360 degree aerial footage of Abney Park
We are grateful to eyerevolution.co.uk for sharing this amazing 360 degree high-definition drone shot of Abney Park, flown at about 60 metres. This amazing footage allows the viewer to zoom in to astonishing detail to explore Abney Park and the surrounding environment.
It was taken several years ago when the chapel was stabilised and made safe in 2016. Here is Hackney Council's press notice from the time explaining the work.
On the chapel you can see the hoardings, scaffold and some of the detailed work being undertaken. Work will begin again in summer 2021 to fully refurbish and restore the chapel through Hackney Council's successful National Lottery Heritage Fund bid, developed in conjunction with the Trust.
The footage, recorded in amazing high definition, also shows the incredible magical urban woodland canopy here in the heart of Hackney. Taken on an early autumn day you can see how the dense tree rises above the rooftops and dominates the local area like no other park or green space. From this you can get a real sense of the woodland cover. The tree cover is a mix of trees nearly 200 years’ old together with much more recent self-seeded cover from the post war period after the cemetery company went out of business.
This dense woodland is the reason that Abney is such a calm space, so valued by the local community in the middle of urban London. It changes through the seasons. Picturesque in the snow; soothing and cool on a hot summer's day.
This rare woodland habitat is a designated local nature reserve and you can learn more about Abney's ecology by listening to local ecologist Russell Miller's online talk about what makes the ecosystem so rare and valuable.
Thanks to eyerevolution.co.uk for sharing the footage with us for visitors to our website to enjoy.
