Abney Park Revisited: Folk Duo Katharine Blake & Charlie Cawood

  • Abney Park Trust 215 Stoke Newington High Street London, England, N16 0LH United Kingdom (map)

This event will be held after the cemetery has closed. Stewards will meet you at the main Egyptian entrance gates off Stoke Newington High Street from 8:30pm to guide guests in groups to the centre chapel. The last group will be met at the gates at 8:50pm. There will be no late entry.

Join Katharine Blake and Charlie Cawood in Abney Park's chapel for an evening of folk music with violin and recorder in the centre of our beautiful cemetery. Katharine and Charlie will be performing mediaeval and folk music as a duo, and will also be joined by special guest Anna Pool from Mediaeval Baebes to perform songs from the Baebe’s new album ‘A Pocketful of Posies’, a psychadelic folk adventure through the surreal and often terrifying world of nursery rhymes.

Katharine Blake returns to the scene of the very first Mediaeval Baebes concert in Abney Park cemetery. It was back in 1996, when they first serenaded both the living and the dead. Armed only with a map, guests made their way to the then derelict chapel for this infamous performance – and the rest is history!

Katharine Blake is the founder, musical director, composer, and arranger of the unique and otherwordly classical chart-topping choir Mediaeval Baebes. Formed in 1996, the group have toured internationally, released eight studio albums, won an Ivor Novella award for their performance on the BBC s serialisation ‘The Virgin Queen’, and received two Emmy nominations as the featured artist on the theme tune for the hit TV show ‘Victoria’.

Most recently, they were invited by Iggy Pop to perform as special guests on his Xmas day radio 6 special.

Katharine is also known as the lead singer and song writer of the 90s avant-garde gothic rock band Miranda Sex Garden, and has worked with Nick Cave, Michael Nyman, and John Cale.

Charlie Cawood, who has been playing with Mediaeval Baebes since 2014, is a composer and multi-instrumentalist from London. A professional interdisciplinary musician since the age of 17, Charlie is also a member of cult progressive psychedelia octet Knifeworld. His debut solo album, 'The Divine Abstract', was released in November 2017, to universal critical acclaim.
